How Do We Fix Our Thoughts?
The account of restoration recorded in Nehemiah is inspirational for Christians today. The people of God have been attacked on many fronts during the pandemic both corporately and personally. Our health, like everyone else’s has been exposed to dangers. Our spiritual institutions have been attacked by our government. Many church leaders have transitioned as a result. Some became ill, survived the virus but still have lingering side effects that may last the rest of their lives. People of God have been stressed, angry and confused about the experience and their peace is gone.
If you inquire, they may not admit it to you, but many are bombarded with the thoughts that absolutely keep them in hopelessness, destructive behaviors and complex depression. Yes, Christians get depressed by their thoughts that concentrate on hardships, trauma and drama.
It is necessary to rebuild our lives.
God has been teaching me how to rebuild my life and I’m convinced you can benefit from what God has been teaching me. As our example, let’s look at Israel after the destruction. Nehemiah was moved to prayer and asked God for help. The Lord responded to his request by placing His gracious hand upon Nehemiah but the task was great and would need each tribe and skills man to help. They came together to rebuild the wall because the people had thoughts to rebuild.
It its necessary for us to rebuild and the first place for any rebuild is fixing your thoughts.
Nehemiah had government approval, stimulus assistance and skilled people around the task but what it all came down was “A Mind to Work”. Their mind and their thoughts had to be fixed in order to overcome and move past the destruction thats talking to their soul by way of their eyes.
Praying is good but after you finish praying, you must roll up your sleeves and fix your thoughts. God doesn’t control your thoughts. You are responsible for the health of your own thoughts.
Here’s the dilemma, many of us, especially Christians are unaware of what we are holding as truth in our thoughts we have stopped deciphering the ideas, images and suggestions being pounded into our eyes and ears. We’ve stopped shifting what’s coming at us and thereby have become passive gatekeepers for our thoughts. Falsehoods settle in as truth and we allow it to take residence in our thoughts. I want to ask you, what lies about yourself have you taken to be truth? Trust me, the God of this world is lying to you about you, all day, everyday.
God has been teaching me how to rebuild my life but can I testify that the stronghold in the process has been uncovering which lies I had neglected to sift out of my thoughts? The Holy Spirit doesn’t often call my name so when He does, it arrests my attention. The Holy Spirit said to me “Cecelia, fix your mind. Your mind is messing you up.”
Don’t laugh at me because the same may be true for you as well. The thought of your past and present afflictions is messing you up. Your thoughts has your soul in a bowed down condition.
How do we fix our mind? Think accurately and reject the falsehoods that are being pounded upon you everyday.
While you are calling the qualities of God’s character to your mind and getting
hope, also start searching for the truth concerning yourself. There is truth being overshadowed by lies. Search for it. Fixing your thoughts requires you to replace the lies with truth.
Listen, this isn’t magic. This is a process for which you will need to commit. You can pray and talk with God along the way but you must do the fixing.
