Movement Or Moment
Thanks to Disney Plus, I’ve now watched Hamilton many times. In fact, I’ve listened to the soundtrack enough to spontaneously have a private party based on the beat of the hip-hop rhythm. At the very beginning of the play, Hamilton has a line in his song when he is analyzing the current situation. After looking broadly, he concludes, “Scratch that, this isn’t a moment. It’s a movement...”
This morning, as I followed God into His conversation at the base of Mt. Sinai, I present the topic, Moments or Movements. I’ve shared, the location is Mt. Sinai and the time period is a pause between freedom from Egyptian slavery and the establishment of the natural in the place of God’s choice.
Getting into this place had not been quick nor easy. Moses was the person chosen by God to lead the movement, but he would experience many instances where there would be moments that clashed against God’s movement. The very first clash was Moses’ moment when he really didn’t want the assignment and began to present the excuse of his speech problems. Because of that moment, Aaron is given as an assistant to Moses. We have our moments that can clash with God’s movement.
Verse 14, “Wait here for us until we come to you again”. Moses also gives Aaron and Hur the assignment to resolve disputes, if any may arise. God is furthering His movement but this is their moment to either clash or commit to what God is doing.
This scene almost feels like the last act before going into intermission. Verse 15, Moses goes up the mountain, the cloud then covers the mountain and the glory of the Lord settles on Mt. Sinai.
What happens in a movement when there isn’t a lot of movement?
God gave Moses the instruction to wait until He gives him the boundaries for the movement. How does a man, a chosen leader wait in the midst of a settled cloud? A man with a larger than life assignment given to him by God in a settled cloud waiting. How do you wait in a settled cloud knowing that an entire nation is separated from their leader but needing a reliable voice. How do you do that?
Well, scripture doesn’t speak to those days of Moses’ waiting. Scripture does speak about what God said once He began to give laws, commandments and instructions for the people but nothing about the waiting in the settled cloud. I have an idea – I believe Moses’ posture was that of prayer. Aaron and Hur’s responsibility while Moses is in the settled cloud waiting on God is to resolve disputes among the people.
Yes, while God is creating a movement, disputes among the people can arise.
Movements, God’s movements can have lots of actions taking place while appearing like nothing is happening. Moses was gone 40 days and night. A lot was being communicated during those 40 days and nights. A movement was being framed. A movement was getting structure. Moses was hearing God about how the movement should flow and how God should be honored by the movement.
God was giving substance for the movement when at the same time; Aaron decides to step away from God’s movement all for the headshop of his moment. Aaron’s assignment was to resolve disputes so that the movement could flow unhurdled, not tap the dispute and craft his own moment. Aaron’s moment hits its apex with the golden calf.
We know the motion picture image as it relates to the golden calf, but this is more than gold melted down, at the core, it’s Aaron’s personal moment, which has proven to be in conflict with God’s movement. Aaron had not many days before been in the presence of God. He had seen movement.
God, along with the 10 elders. He had eaten in God’s presence. After being exposed to the heart of God and given responsibility for the movement, turn around and spearheaded the Golden Calf moment while Moses was away with God. Exodus chapter 32 is not a good look for Aaron and it doesn’t end well for the people he led into sin and consequently the judgment of God. But more than Aaron’s moment, we see that God’s movement is not stopped.
May I declare to you what you may already sense in the spirit. This new decade is a shifting and sifting movement of God. What has transpired in 2020 will set the pace for the remainder of this era.
If you remember the prophetic announcement I gave just before 2020 entered, we are seeing it come to pass now. In January 2020 God opened my eyes and showed me an open heaven over this church. Kellee saw water pouring down upon me, then running off the platform while I yet gazed upon the open heaven.
This decade, this 2020 year is establishing a new movement of God. You’ve been privileged by God to see exceptional moments that were designed to establish your commitment to God’s movement. In this last quarter of the year the question presented to you is the one of moment or movement.
God is executing a movement. What are you working on? Is it His movement or your moment? 2020 has certainly been a year of exposure and uncovering. God has been uncovering moments so that the movement can flow and grow on a solid foundation.
God has released a new movement in the Body of Christ. While we don’t know all of the laws, boundaries or instructions for the new movement, we do know we’ve been invited into the full participation. Today, God requires each of us to query our own hearts to decide, “Will you be found working in the movement or crafting your own golden calf moment?”
